Why does a title require several results?

The answer

“My dog has already earned a certificate… why do we have to start again?”

Because an award tells of a success at one show, whereas a championship title validates a record that meets several conditions.

One day doesn't tell the whole story

In the ring, the dog is shown at a specific moment: with its condition on the day, its ease and the competitors present.

Repeating results shows that its qualities are appreciated on several occasions. A first win is still precious; the following ones add to what is known of its record.

Several judges bring several assessments

Judges base themselves on the breed standard, but their assessment may differ when they are separating quality dogs.

Requiring results under several judges means the whole championship does not rest on a single evaluation.

A different placing at the next show therefore does not erase the previous result.

Some titles also require several countries

For the International Beauty Champion of a breed not subject to working trials, the general FCI rule provides for:

  • 4 CACIB;
  • 3 different countries;
  • 3 different judges;
  • a minimum period of one year and one day, calculated as specified in the regulations.

These requirements define an international record spread across several places, judges and dates.

The explanations about the consistency and diversity of the assessments are an educational reading of these requirements: the regulations set the conditions, without presenting each one as a scientific justification.

Oslo's travel journal

Imagine four pages:

  • First CACIB — a first success.
  • Second CACIB — a new country and a different judge.
  • Third CACIB — a third assessment.
  • Fourth CACIB — an additional result, with the time period to be checked.

Every page counts, but the file must bring together all the conditions. Four certificates are not enough if the requirements for countries, judges or dates are not met.

Not all titles follow the same recipe

The number of results depends on the title, the country and sometimes the status of the breed.

For the C.I.B. of a breed subject to working trials, the general rule requires two CACIB in two countries, under two different judges, plus an eligible working trial.

So you need to read the regulations for the title you've chosen rather than remember one number that applies to all.

Three tips to improve

Beginner — Savour every step. A certificate is already a success. Take the time to read the judge's comments before thinking about the next show.

Intermediate — Track the conditions separately. Create columns for “certificates”, “judges”, “countries” and “dates”. You'll see what is really missing from the record.

Advanced — Look for useful progress. Compare the observations received and work on the points that keep coming up. Build a calendar that is compatible with your dog's recovery and enjoyment.
