How do you track your progress towards a title?
The answer
The cards pile up, the shows follow one another… and one question keeps coming back: "What is still missing to get the title?"
Useful tracking should show the results obtained, the conditions remaining and the supporting documents available. Here is a simple method.
1. Create a sheet for each title
Write down the full name of the title you are aiming for, then copy out its conditions from the official rules.
Avoid mixing up routes: an adult CACIB, a Junior CACIB and a CACS (the French national certificate) do not meet the same objectives.
Add the link to the rules and the date on which you checked them.
2. Record each result
After a show, take a few minutes to complete your notebook:
| Information | What to note |
|---|---|
| Show | Name, date, place and country |
| Class | Junior, intermediate, open, working… |
| Judge | Full name |
| Result | Grade, placing and exact certificate |
| Supporting documents | Card, official result, report |
| Status | Proposed, confirmed or converted, depending on the certificate |
Photograph the documents before putting them away. A legible photo is better than a vague memory!
3. Track each condition separately
For the C.I.B. of a breed not subject to a working requirement, the general FCI rule provides for four CACIBs, three countries, three different judges and a minimum time between the first and the last.
Here is a fictional example of a dashboard:
| Condition | Oslo's situation | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 4 CACIB | 3 won and confirmed | To complete |
| 3 different countries | France, Belgium, Germany | Met |
| 3 different judges | 3 judges | Met |
| Required time limit | Not yet reached | To complete |
| Supporting documents | One document missing | To complete |
"Three certificates out of four" therefore does not necessarily mean "title almost complete". Several conditions may remain open.
4. Check the official results
For adult CACIBs, the FCI publishes the confirmed certificates in its results database. A CACIB still being processed does not appear there immediately.
So tell a certificate proposed in the ring apart from its official confirmation. For a convertible reserve, also keep proof of conversion before counting it as a CACIB.
5. Add the additional conditions
Depending on the title and the breed, your sheet may also include confirmation, DNA, health tests, character or working tests.
Give each line a clear status:
- To plan
- Done, document awaited
- Document available
This avoids discovering a missing document at the moment of submitting the application.
6. Follow the title approval application
Keep three distinct stages:
- Conditions met
- Application sent
- Title approved
Note the date it was sent and keep the official confirmation. The title is won once its approval has been confirmed.
Three tips for improving
Beginner — Take stock after each show. Five minutes is enough to note the result and photograph the card.
Intermediate — Plan your next outings based on the missing conditions. Your table should help you spot a country, a different judge or a type of show that is still needed.
Advanced — Check the application before the last entry. Check the time limits, the confirmed certificates and the additional documents. You can then plan the final step with a complete picture.
