How do you earn a championship?

The answer

Is your dog racking up good results, and are you starting to dream of a champion title? To earn one, you need to meet the conditions of a specific title, then have the file confirmed.

A championship is prepared with a calendar as much as with a show lead!

1. Choose the title you want to work towards

"Becoming a champion" can mean several different routes:

A French title: French Champion for Conformity to the Standard, National Shows Champion, Junior or Veteran.

An FCI international title: International Beauty Champion, Show Champion, Junior or Veteran.

The choice depends on the dog's age, his breed and the requirements of the title.

2. Read the conditions before you enter

Prepare a list of the results and documents needed:

What to checkWhy?
Certificates and gradesNot all results count towards the same title
Type of showA Nationale d'Élevage (a French national breed show), a breed speciality show and an ordinary show can play different roles
Judges and countriesSome titles require a variety of judges or countries
DeadlinesResults and the application must meet the applicable deadlines
Additional conditionsConfirmation, DNA, health, temperament or working trial, depending on the route

For a French title, also consult your breed club: additional requirements can vary.

3. Earn the required results

Here is an example of an international route, leaving aside FCI exemptions:

For the International Beauty Champion title in a breed not subject to a working trial, you need 4 CACIBs in 3 countries, under 3 different judges, with the minimum time span required between the first and the last.

For a breed subject to a working trial, the C.I.B. requires 2 CACIBs in 2 countries, under 2 different judges, plus the admissible working test.

A breed win or a Best in Show does not replace these certificates.

Oslo's road map

Imagine three pages in his file:

  • Page 1 — The results: Each certificate, with its date, judge and show.
  • Page 2 — The other conditions: The documents needed for the title and the breed.
  • Page 3 — The application: The official form and the documents to send.

This organisation lets you see what is already achieved and what remains to be done.

4. Apply for confirmation of the title

Confirmation (homologation) is the official recognition of the title.

Once the conditions are met, use the corresponding form and follow the route indicated: breed club, national kennel organisation or FCI, depending on the title.

The last certificate obtained does not automatically trigger the award of the title. Wait for official confirmation before presenting your dog as the holder of that championship.

Three tips to improve

Beginner — Start with a single goal. Ask the breed club for a clear list of the conditions of the chosen title. You will avoid mixing up several routes.

Intermediate — Keep a table after each show. Note the result, judge, country and supporting document. Add a "condition met" column to track your progress.

Advanced — Check the file before the final step. Check the deadlines and the documents still missing before booking your travel. Also plan any additional tests well in advance.
