Entering a dog show: step by step

The answer

Your dog is ready for the ring… but in front of the entry form you hesitate: which show? Which documents? And when is the entry actually confirmed?

Don't worry: with your dog's papers at hand and a few checks, it all gets simpler. This guide uses French shows and the SCC Expo platform as the example; in other FCI countries, follow the platform named by the organiser or the national canine organisation.

1. Choose a show that accepts your breed

All-breed national and international shows accept the breeds recognised by the national canine organisation or the FCI. Breed club shows are limited to the club's breeds. Check the breeds admitted on the entry form.

Before choosing, note the venue, the date and, for multi-day events, the day your breed is judged.

Word to know: at a dog show, "entering" your dog means registering it to compete.

2. Gather your dog's details

Keep its birth certificate or pedigree nearby to copy its registered name, date of birth, stud-book number and identification correctly.

In France your dog does not need to be confirmed to enter a show: a birth certificate is enough to start. The entry must be made by the owner, even if someone else handles the dog on the day.

3. Select the right class

The class is the category your dog is judged in. It depends mainly on age and, for some classes, on specific proof.

At an FCI international CACIB show, age is calculated on the day the dog is shown, not on the day you fill in the form. A dog cannot be entered in two individual classes at the same show.

Example: your dog is 8 months old today but will be 9 months on show day. For that international show it belongs in junior class, not puppy class.

For working class, FCI rules require the appropriate Working Class Certificate (WCC). For champion class you must prove an eligible title, confirmed no later than the official entry deadline.

4. Read the conditions before confirming

Take a few minutes to read the entry form and the show rules. Look for:

  • the closing date and fees;
  • the documents required;
  • health and access conditions;
  • terms for changes and refunds.

A refund is never automatic. On SCC Expo, requests must follow each show's own terms.

5. Fill in your entry online

On SCC Expo, create your account, add your dog, then sign in. Find the show under "Évènements et manifestations", open "S'engager en ligne", select your dog, its class and any options, then add the entry to the basket.

Before paying, check the summary like a boarding pass: right dog, right show, right date, right class.

6. Pay and keep the receipt

A full basket is not enough: your dog is entered once payment is confirmed. A receipt is emailed after payment. Do this before entries close and save the receipt somewhere easy to find.

7. Get your entry pass and prepare to leave

On SCC Expo, the entry pass arrives after entries close, a few days before the show. It is also in "Mon compte" > "Engagements terminés". Not receiving it right after payment is normal.

Read the instructions and prepare the dog's documents: birth certificate or pedigree, identification and any health papers. Bring water, a bowl, a lead and treats.

Beginner: three tips

  1. Prepare the papers before opening the form. You won't mix up your dog's call name with its registered name.
  2. Choose an easy first show. A reasonable journey leaves you more energy for your dog.
  3. Check that the receipt arrived. It is the first document you should get after a successful payment.

Intermediate: three tips

  1. Recalculate age for every show. A class that fits this month may not fit next time.
  2. Re-read saved details. Don't assume an old profile or entry is correct.
  3. Fix mistakes quickly. At FCI international shows, changing class after closing is not allowed, except for an organiser's administrative error.

Advanced: three tips

  1. Plan working or champion proof early. Check eligibility before choosing the class.
  2. Check each entry of a multi-show weekend. Day, class and payment, separately for each event.
  3. Keep one folder per show. Rules, documents sent, receipt and entry pass, all in one place.
