National titles: how does a dog become a champion?

The answer

A CACS, a breed win, a cup… Your dog is starting to build up a record! But earning an award and becoming a champion are two different steps.

A national title recognises a path that meets the conditions of the country’s kennel organisation. Here we take France as the reference, with the show titles of the Société Centrale Canine (SCC, the French kennel club).

The main French titles

TitleThe path involved
Champion de France de Conformité au Standard (French Champion of Conformity to the Standard)A set of results at specified shows, with the requirements specific to the breed
Champion des Expositions Nationales (Champion of the National Shows)A path based on national shows, complemented in particular by a result at a Nationale d’Élevage (national breed show)
Champion de France Jeune (French Junior Champion)A deciding result in the junior class at the French Championship or the Nationale d’Élevage
Champion de France Vétéran (French Veteran Champion)A deciding result in the veteran class at those same events
Champion des Expositions Nationales Jeune (Junior Champion of the National Shows)A path based on CACS-J awards at national shows
Champion des Expositions Nationales Vétéran (Veteran Champion of the National Shows)A path based on CACS-V awards at national shows

Champion de France Jeune and Champion des Expositions Nationales Jeune are therefore two separate titles. The same distinction applies to veterans.

Show results are not the whole file

Depending on the title and the breed, you need to check:

  • The results required and the type of show where they can be earned.
  • The number of different judges and any deadlines.
  • Confirmation and genetic identification.
  • Any health, character or working requirements.

The breed club’s conditions matter: two dogs of different breeds may have different additional steps.

A little scene to help you understand

Oslo has just earned a new CACS. His owner prepares three folders:

Results: cards and show supporting documents. Additional conditions: documents required for his breed. Homologation: form and file to submit following the official procedure.

When all the conditions are met, the owner applies for homologation, that is, the official recognition of the title.

Oslo does not automatically become a champion at the moment the judge hands him his last certificate.

And what if my dog wins Best in Show?

Best in Show rewards a win at a show. A national champion title validates a regulated path.

A fine win can enrich the record without replacing the results and supporting documents required for the title being worked towards.

And abroad?

Each country has its own championships and conditions. A French title does not automatically give a title in another country.

Before travelling, consult the rules of the national kennel organisation concerned.

Three tips to progress

Beginner — Choose a precise goal. Ask your breed club which title matches your dog’s age and path. Keep its full name to avoid confusion.

Intermediate — Build a tracking table. For each condition, note “obtained”, “still to obtain” and the supporting document available. You will see at once what is missing.

Advanced — Check the rules that apply to your file. Before scheduling your next shows, have the deadlines and breed requirements confirmed. The SCC states that the health and performance conditions taken into account depend on the year of the results that give entitlement to the title.
