Working class: from the field to the ring

The answer

Has your dog shown what it can do in a working discipline? It may be able to be shown in the working class. This class is for dogs that have reached an officially recognised level in a test suited to their breed.

But on show day there is no hunting or herding demonstration: the judge assesses conformation to the standard, as in the other classes. The working abilities were checked beforehand.

What are the entry requirements?

Three conditions must be met:

  • An eligible breed: listed as subject to working tests in the FCI nomenclature for international shows, or authorised by the regulations of the Centrale Canine (the French kennel club) for national shows.
  • At least 15 months old on the day of showing.
  • An official working class certificate, issued by the Centrale Canine or by a foreign body recognised by the FCI, confirming the level required in the discipline concerned.

This certificate must have been obtained before the final closing date for entries.

An active dog is not automatically eligible!

A dog that goes hunting with its owner, works with livestock or is very well trained cannot be entered on that basis alone. The activity it does is no substitute for the regulatory result and its certificate.

Example: Oscar has achieved a result in a working test. Before choosing this class, his owner checks that the result reaches the required level, then applies for the certificate. The working record book does not, on its own, replace the document required at entry.

How do you obtain the certificate?

The Centrale Canine states that the request is made through LOFConnect (its online platform), under:

Shop → Dog-related services → Working class certificate.

The required levels vary by discipline. They are set out in article A-10 of the show regulations (the French ones): there is therefore no single result that is valid for every dog.

For an international show, the FCI regulations require a copy of the WCC — Working Class Certificate, proving that the appropriate test has been passed.

What awards can it win?

In France, the working class allows a dog to compete for the French CACS, under the arrangements set for the breed and the show.

At an international show, it also gives access to the CACIB, subject to eligibility conditions. The dog must be awarded 1st Excellent in its class to be in contention; the certificate is not automatic.

Three tips to make progress

Beginner — Check your eligibility before entering. Check the breed, the age and the certificate. If you are unsure about the result required, look at article A-10 with your breed club.

Intermediate — Prepare for the show presentation too. A dog with field experience needs to learn to stand, trot steadily and accept the judge's examination. Practise these exercises in short, enjoyable sessions.

Advanced — Plan ahead for international shows. Check that your certificate meets the requirements of the country and show you are aiming for. Keep a legible copy and finalise the file before the closing date: national and international eligibility can differ.
